60-Second Interview Pitch
"I built 17-CDN-Caching-Proxy, an RFC 9111 compliant reverse caching edge proxy in TypeScript and Node.js stream pipelines. Siting between client browsers and backend origins, it serves cached static and dynamic responses with sub-millisecond lookups, reducing origin bandwidth consumption by up to 95%. It eliminates thundering herd cache stampedes via single-flight request coalescing, supports on-the-fly streaming Brotli compression, handles video seeking via RFC 7233 byte-range slicing, and executes sub-5ms tag purges with an immutable SHA-256 audit log. The system is verified by 151 Vitest test suites and includes a Next.js 14 real-time operations dashboard."
3-Minute Project Walkthrough
"In large-scale web systems, uncached traffic creates database bottlenecks, high cloud bandwidth expenses, and slow global latencies.
To solve this, I designed and built 17-CDN-Caching-Proxy, an RFC 9111 compliant edge proxy.
The request path starts in
src/proxy/index.ts. When an HTTP request arrives on port 8080, it passes through an edge WAF checking CIDR IP allowlists, Host headers, and JWT tokens. We then generate a canonical cache key insrc/cache/key.tsby lowercasing URLs, sorting query parameters alphabetically, and incorporating secondary hashes fromVaryheaders. In
src/cache/lookup.ts, we query our in-memoryMemoryStore. On a cache hit, we evaluate object freshness per RFC 9111, attachX-Cache: HITand calculatedAgeheaders, and stream the cached buffer straight to the client socket without touching disk.On a cache miss, to prevent hundreds of concurrent requests from stampeding the origin, I implemented a Single-Flight Request Coalescer in
src/proxy/coalesce.ts. The first request is elected leader and forwards to origin, while subsequent requests join an in-flight queue. When the origin responds, the stream is tee-piped into the cache store while simultaneously fanning out to all waiting clients. For cache invalidation, I built a Surrogate-Key tag index in
src/purge/that invalidates thousands of catalog items within 5 milliseconds, backed by a SHA-256 tamper-evident audit log.On port 9090, our admin server exposes Prometheus metrics and an embedded control SPA, which also powers a Next.js 14 real-time operations dashboard with live hit-ratio and latency charts. The entire architecture is verified across 151 test suites and 1,064 assertions, including forced GC tests that confirm zero memory leaks over 1,000 sequential 1 MB requests."
Hardest Function Explained Line by Line: RequestCoalescer.joinOrLead()
- File:
src/proxy/coalesce.ts:38 - Line 39:
const existing = this.flightMap.get(keyHash);— Performs O(1) hash map lookup for an active in-flight request on this canonical cache key. - Line 40-45: If
existingis found, constructs a newPromise<CoalesceResult>, registers the caller'sresolveandrejectcallbacks intoexisting.waiters, and returns{ isLeader: false, waitPromise: promise }. This suspends the request without opening an upstream socket. - Line 46-52: If no in-flight entry exists, instantiates an
InflightFlightrecord withwaiters: new Map(), stores it intoflightMap, and returns{ isLeader: true }, designating this caller as the sole upstream requestor.

For example, during request execution, the proxy coordinates state transitions using deterministic protocol rules. In src/proxy/index.ts and related modules, input parameters are strictly validated using Zod schemas, state mutations are isolated within thread-safe in-memory data structures, and errors are trapped to prevent event loop blocking. Under high load, resources are governed by bounded queues and circuit breakers (src/health/circuit-breaker.ts), ensuring predictable latency and RFC 9111 compliance.
